On June 11, 2019, Nintendo released more information on upcoming games in a Nintendo Direct at E3 2019. I will go over what was announced, and add some impressions at the end. There is a fair amount to cover here, so let’s get started.
- For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Hero (from the Dragon Quest series) will be the next DLC character. It was shown that the alternate costumes will allow you to play as different Dragon Quest protagonists when playing as this character. (Note, this may be why this character’s name is only “The Hero”, and not the default name of any one Dragon Quest character.) This will be released in summer 2019.
- Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will be released on September 27, 2019
- Luigi’s Mansion 3 will come out sometime in 2019. Some additional features were showcased:
- Luigi can slam ghosts while vacuuming a ghost.
- He can use the suction plunger similar to a grappling hook.
- He can use a burst to knock ghosts back.
- He can use Gooigi to get to hard to reach places, and navigate obstacles requiring two people. Gooigi is vulnerable to water, and can be used for co-op.
- There is a mode called scare scraper, which played in online or local co-op.
- Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will be released in 2019.
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Remake) has a new feature where you can (with some restrictions, it seems) create your own dungeons. The game’s release date is September 20, 2019.

Impressions:
Overall, this was a very solid E3 for Nintendo. While most of the surprise announcements were from third party and indie developers, some of the best announcements were concerning the Smash Bros. DLC and their final announcement of the Breath of the Wild sequel. I found it interesting that they mentioned that Pokémon Sword and Shield info will be at E3 on social media, but barely anything noteworthy for the game came from the direct. Even though most of the games I’m looking forward to here were already announced, I am still glad that some games I didn’t know about were showcased. I would have liked more details on some of the games shown (Fire Emblem: Three houses, for example), this may be due to time constraints. There were a lot of games in this direct, so there was a need not to make it longer than an hour. In all, I am satisfied, but look forward to hearing more in the future.
