Well, a Super Mario Direct, focused on the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. was dropped on Thursday, September 3, 2020. There were quite a few announcements, some of which confirmed some rumors, others were covering products other than video games, but all of it was interesting to see. Let’s take a look.

  • Game & Watch Super Mario Bros., which features Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, an updated version of the Game & Watch game Ball, and has a clock feature releases on November 13 with limited production.
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury releases February 12, 2021.
  • Super Mario Bros. 35, a version of the original game where 35 players compete with each other will be available on October 1, 2020. It will be playable until March 31, 2021. For Nintendo Switch online members only.
  • Mario Kart Live Home Circuit, an AR game that connects to Nintendo Switch, and uses a real remote control race car and track releases on October 16, 2020.
  • From September 3, 2020 to March 31, 2021, you can earn a special pin set by performing Super Mario themed missions on their website.
  • Mario Kart Tour will have a special event on September 8, 2020 at 11:00pm PST that features Mario and Donkey Kong Jr. from the original Super Mario Kart game.
  • Some Mario themed merchandise will be available at the Nintendo New York store starting in October.
  • A 35th anniversary themed ninji speedrun will come to Super Mario Maker 2 in November 2020.
  • Later this year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have a tournament featuring Super Mario characters, stages, and items.
  • A Super Mario themed Splatfest will come to Splatoon 2 in January 2021. Themed key chains related to the Splatfest will be available as my Nintendo rewards. Tee shirts for the Splatfest will also be available for purchase online.
  • Super Mario themed furniture will come to the game Animal Crossing New Horizons in March 2021.
  • Some additional products include:
    • Super Mario Puma Sneakers on September 4, 2020.
    • BlackMilk overalls and shirt on October 5, 2020.
    • Super Mario Monopoly and Jenga board games, already available.
    • Jakks Pacific Mario figure, available now.
    • Lego Super Mario, available now.
  • Super Mario All-Stars will be available on Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo collection the day of the Direct.
  • Super Mario 3D All Stars which features Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, releases on September 18, 2020 with a limited run both on retail and digital till the end of March 2021.

And that is all they announced. I find it interesting that the rumors of Super Mario 3D All Stars was accurate, although Super Mario Galaxy 2 was missing from that collection. I want to try out Super Mario Bros. 35, as I liked Tetris 99, which seems similar. While I don’t but products much anymore, it is nice to see that they exist for the fans who do. I do find it odd that some games will have a limited run though, and it feels like a missed opportunity in that regard. Either way, this news was still worth a look for Super Mario fans. It is good to see that there are still games to look forward to.

And that sums up the Super Mario 35th anniversary direct. What did you make of it? What game or product are you most excited for? Let me know in the comments below!
