Intro: The 10 Day Video Game Challenge on Facebook

Links-HomeReviewsArticlesLibraryContact

Earlier this month, I had participated on the 10 day video game challenge on Facebook. For ten consecutive days, I had to list the 10 video games that most influenced me as a gamer. It was nice to look back and reflect on what games altered the way I play and enjoy video games. However, this challenge wasn’t a top ten list, and the only order I placed them in was (roughly) chronological. Only two games were actual favorites on this list, as there were games similar to the ones on this list that I liked better. I will expand on my writings in a series of posts to further reveal a little more about myself, and to give my readers a sense of what kind of games I will review in the future, both new and old.

So, without further ado, here are the ten games I selected for this challenge, followed by a quick explanation for why they were chosen.

  • Day 1: Super Mario Bros.
    • First game
    • Influenced me and industry
  • Day 2: Super Mario World
    • First game in console generation transition
    • First game I completed
    • First game I remember learning something new many years later
  • Day 3: Mega Man X
    • First game I got good at
    • First game that taught me to play without tutorials
  • Day 4: Kirby Super Star
    • First major co-op experience
    • First attack pattern recognition
  • Day 5: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
    • First RPG
    • First realization of other game genres
  • Day 6: Pokemon Blue version
    • First Pokemon game
    • Along with previous entry, it caused me to favor RPG’s
    • One of the few games that infiltrated my dreams
    • One of the few games I play on a competitive level (later in the series)
    • Inspired me to get Nintendo Power magazine
    • Inspired me to study game design
  • Day 7: Super Smash Bros. (N64)
    • Solidified my strong preference for Nintendo games
    • Wanted to play all the games these characters were from
  • Day 8: Earthbound
    • Perhaps my absolute favorite
    • The game that entered my dreams the most
    • A reminder of the end of my childhood
  • Day 9: Splatoon
    • First action based online experience
    • I came to the realization that Nintendo can make a new franchise
    • One of the few games that I attempt to play competitively
  • Day 10: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
    • Possibly the best game I ever played
    • Gave hope that some game franchises can get better after they appeared to have peaked

These are the games that influenced me the most. The following are games that didn’t quite make the list, but I desired to talk about anyway.

  • Super Mario Kart
    • First rivalry in a video game
  • Tetris and Dr. Mario
    • Last rivalry with my brother
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
    • First Zelda game
    • Part of my exploration of game genres outside of platformers.

I look forward to writing more about these games in the following weeks. In case you were wondering, here’s a template for the challenge if you want to try it out for yourself:

Day (X) of the 10-day video game challenge, where over the course of 10 days I show 10 video games that impacted me and choose 10 people to complete the challenge as well. This isn’t a top 10 list. It’s a list that has impacted me as a gamer. I nominate (friend). (Enter how this game influenced you as a gamer. Write as much or as little as you like)

So that is my list of the 10 day Video Game challenge on Facebook. What games would you select for this list? What favorites wouldn’t make your list? Which of these games would you like to see in a future article that I write? Any reviews you would like to see from this list? let me know in the comments below!
