Game Story Case Study, Episode 26: Puyo Puyo Tetris (Part 26)

It is that time again to look at another scene from Puyo Puyo Tetris. This scene is relatively short, and takes place in the final act of the game. Unlike past episodes, I will not be skipping any scenes in this final push. So with that out of the way, let’s take a look.

Act 7, Scene 2:

Recap: So Ringo and friends have traveled to the edge of spacetime, and met the keeper of dimensions, whose name is Ex. They find out that Ex has been receiving Tee’s reports and we get to learn more about Ex as he leads the crew further into his domain.

Well, I have a few questions here. Not the least of which is how Ex became able to travel between worlds? I do wonder how the title of keeper of dimensions came about too. The loneliness this brings about is the main thing to keep in mind when analyzing this part of the story. Previously, two characters implied that his actions were malicious, but from the looks of things, that is not the case. Let’s see where this scene goes next.

So normally, I remove O and Carbuncle’s lines in my analysis. This time, I leave these lines in, as it appears some important info was mentioned by O, but of course he speaks in gibberish, so it is somewhat unclear if he revealed that he knew anything. The context clues imply that he did, but since he doesn’t speak any language that is somewhat ambiguous. I also wonder if the characters can understand them. It seems that they do, though I’m not sure how…. Let’s move on.

So the issue the heroes are learning about here is Ex’s loneliness. Unfortunately, half these lines in this exchange are from Carbuncle and O, so there is no way to know if anything else important was said. Now the game switches to gameplay.

So this is what happens when the player succeeds in the gameplay portion. It seems that Ex is leading our heroes somewhere. That being said, not much of importance happened in this scene. In addition, this scene, like so may others, ends rather abruptly. This is an ongoing problem with this game’s story…

Thankfully, I am almost done. The next few scenes will start to conclude the story of Puyo Puyo Tetris, and there will be a few more revelations too. Stay tuned!

And that was yet another scene in my analysis of Puyo Puyo Tetris’s story mode. What did you make of this scene? Did you find a redeeming quality or fault that I missed?
