Day 2: The 10 Day Video Game Challenge on Facebook

Today I will give the recap of my day 2 of the 10 day video game challenge. As a reminder, the games featured are not my top 10, but are the top ten most influential games to me as a gamer. Today’s game is Super Mario World. This was the first game where I experienced a change in console hardware. It might not be much now, but the shift in graphical and musical quality seemed like a lot at the time. The additional buttons helped too. Additionally, Yoshi became one of my favorite Mario characters.

I think this was the first game I ever completed. I remember taking some alternate paths through the game, some of which were shown to me be other players. In particular, I remember bypassing the vanilla dome ghost house by taking the more complex way around. This involved hitting the red switch palace, and getting outside and exiting world 3 via the fortress outside.

I also have a distinct memory of learning something new about the game many years later after downloading it on the Wii virtual console. I found out that it is possible to spin jump off of flames that jump out of lava pits unharmed. The best part was that I found out accidentally.

This is near where I learned about spin jumping off of flames. I got impatient with the yellow blocks I was trapped in.

All in all, Super Mario World was an important evolution in gaming. With things like a save system (not the first to do so), alternate paths, and the obvious hardware improvements, this game showed that games could be more than what the NES could supply.

Here are a few other games that you might like if you like this one:

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Okay, that is only one additional game, but Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 were mentioned on the previous post, and I didn’t really want to repeat myself. Super Mario World is still one of the best platformers made to date, and is worth a look if you want to see how Mario changed throughout the years.

That was my day 2 of the 10 day video game challenge on Facebook. What game would you place on 2 day if you took the challenge? What did you think of Super Mario World? Was there any game where you discovered something new in it years later? Let me know in the comments below.
